Hiking at Lake Braies – your active holiday in every season

Something’s always happening, in every season.

Lake Braies lies right on your doorstep – but there’s so much more waiting all around it. From the slopes to the hiking trails, from the cross-country tracks to the cycle paths: it’s so varied here, all year round.

When the snow arrives:
Winter & spring

When the mountains and valley turn white, it’s time to head out into the snow – and here it stays well into spring.

Up onto the slopes

White slopes, crisp mountain air and the Dolomites all around – when it comes to skiing, you’re spoilt for choice: just a few minutes from the hotel lies the small, family-friendly ski area right in the heart of Braies (2 drag lifts, 3 slopes, and now also a toboggan run), where even the youngest can take it easy. At Plan de Corones, one of South Tyrol’s largest and most modern ski areas, you can carve your tracks with a view of the Dolomites. Around Monte Baranci and Monte Elmo, the slopes of the Tre Cime Dolomites await – from gentle to steep, for every taste.

Right in the middle of the cross-country network

When all you hear is your own breathing and the crunch of skis in the snow, you know you’re right in the middle of it. The tracks of the Dolomiti NordicSki cross-country network reach all the way down into the valley and run from Ferrara to San Candido, Dobbiaco, Sesto and beyond. Those who want to go higher head up to Prato Piazza – the track up there is among the most demanding and most beautiful in the area.

Step by step through the snow

In winter, Lake Braies turns completely white, still and almost magical – a walk there is especially worthwhile right now.

Our tip for a snowshoe hike: Prato Piazza, which stretches out even wider and more peaceful in winter.

From blossom to foliage
Spring, summer & autumn

As soon as the meadows turn green again, it’s time to head out for hiking and biking – right through to late autumn.

From the lake to the summit:
hiking in Val di Braies

The path to Lake Braies alone is an experience: about 30 to 40 minutes along a forest trail, without ever crossing a road – also easily manageable with a dog or an off-road pushchair. From there, scenic paths lead further up into the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park, for example towards Croda del Becco or Sasso del Signore, up to the Lago dei Colli Alti, or onto Monte Prà della Vacca, with a stop at a rustic mountain hut along the way. Our insider tip: straight from the hotel up Monte Prà della Vacca, then down to Lake Braies, and back to the hotel from there. For everyone, including with children and dogs on a leash, we also recommend Monte Specie, with an easy path and an even more beautiful view. Those who want more can take on Monte Lungo and Monte Serla. And for those after a bit more adventure, the surrounding area offers plenty of via ferrata routes.

Full speed through the valley:
mountain biking in the Tre Cime Dolomites region

In Val di Braies itself, paths and trails wind through dense forests and sunny meadows, with views of the Dolomites – ideal for mountain bike rides with a bit more climbing.  Those who prefer to take it easier can take the Val Pusteria cycle path towards Dobbiaco, San Candido or Brunico.

A little quieter:
culture & shopping

With so much activity out in nature, there’s room for something a little calmer too. A few suggestions:
